View Full Version : What are You Reading?
At the moment I'm reading Missing by Barry Cummins. Its about the unsolved cases of missing women in Ireland, along with the two unsolved schoolchildren cases of Phillip Cairns and Mary Boyle. Its a very unsettling read, and I'm reading it very slowly, case by case, but I've taken breaks in between, as I find it very disturbing. Very well written though, and the families have co- operated and spoken to the author, so it lends more of a personal tone than a journalistic one to the cases.
Particularly poignant in light of the Madeline case.
I'm not reading but writing, though I've read and researched alot about the subject I;m writing about (Cobh's Republican past 1913-2006). Iv'e written a similar one years ago, but since 2000, infinately more material has come into the public domain. I know that not everyone is into history, but I find some of the subject matter rivetting. Some times I find it hard to believe it is the same town we are living in today. Considering that Cobh was the heart of everything in the British scheme of things, it was truly remarkable what republicans achived here. Cobh led the way from the very start in 1913, even before the City, and it was Cobh men that built up the whole organisation in East Cork. The town took a hammering too, when the British decided to lash back, But lets not spoil it, the book should be out by next easter!

Ya I've been a granda since last November, my own 2 and 1/2 year old being an auntie now Katy. Whatever about celebrity status girl, my out look towards life is just like the foot-note on you threads Katy -My roots are with the ordinary people, and thats where they will stay!
Looking forward to seeing the book on the shelves Kieran (of a local bookshop as we all sip champagne at the high profile launch!)
Thanks Firefly, I know I must start making plans for the Launch -I have some thoughts for it and I'm not sure how much control the publishers will have over that, but I'm more concerned for now with trying to complete the writing side of it!

`Dont know myself Katy, aint enough hours in the day. A huge cloud over the head all the time as I write, knowing what task I have to make the publishers deadline. I know I should be enjoying it more writing. Perhaps when I reach a certain point, I'll know i have it cracked and will relax a bit then!

Waitin patiently for a good read!
On a serious note -Anyone got any ideas for the front cover? Publisher has asked if I have any particular picture or illustration I'd like to go with the title. Bare in mind that its a book with a particular theme and is not a general history of Cobh, so the usual sterotype image of Cobh with the cathedral etc, may not be appropriate in this case. The title is "Republican Cobh 1913-2006" Subtitle- "Cobh's Contribution to the Fight for Irish Freedom"! I plenty of photos of some of the local leaders, so I might use one of them with a local land mark behind. Come on guys, post your ideas!
Kieran...whats the title of first and last chapters of book....just to help me think of a few ideas..........:) Katy

Some ideas K!
Republican plot old church no.1
The twelve no.2
The IRA no. 3
I thought of that already Ned, but as you can see, theres too much info there on one page -excluding the two titles. Pity theres no old photo record of the British Belmont Camp. I have a picture of Mick Burke IRA O/C which was taken across the road at Mount Eaton at a training camp! The two would have been ideal. Katy- First chapter is simply caled the Volunteers, I havnt reached to last chapter yet so have no idea what it will be called!

Just started reading ' Women Who Spied For Ireland' by Meda Ryan ....cheers Katy
