i dont know if anyone else has been to the playground recently but i took my daughter down last nite to let off a bit of excess energy and was suprised to see a large chunk taken out the ground near one the "roundie thing" (thats what my D calls it anyway). this has only happened in the last wk or 2 becos i regulary go down there. its so dangerous, i seen at least 3 kids trip and fall last nite, including my little one, who didnt quite fall to the ground but ran forward and almost went head first into a bench!! this isnt the first time that ive seen chunks taken out of there but this is def that largest. the material that used for the flooring is very soft for obvious reasons but surely it shouldnt break away and form a hole so easily.

Also one of the gates doesnt work and instead of fixing it whoever has just wrapped a chain and locked it closed.....better i suppose then the piece of string that was holding it closed before!!!
Ive had my little rant now, but seriously it isnt safe for the kids.

Kieran, i presume the council is in charge of this facility?

So does my little angel too Mike. I took her to two seperate play areas in Sheperds Bush last week of roughly similar size. Believe it or not, they both had holes just like the white point one. One of the play areas was completly closed off because the estate owners were afraid of having to pay out compo! What a job I had trying to explain that to a screaming 2 1/2 year old. The other one was in a public park owned by the Bush Borough Council. That was open for business alright. I dont mind being the messenger and your conduit to Town Hall lads but heres the catch. If I raise your concerns -and I will, they will close it down for repairs. The problem is, and take my word for it, dont expect them to carry out those repairs anytime soon. The feckers are immune to criticism, so nagging them wont get any great results, But lets give it a lash anyway, Sure we can take a photo and put it in the magazine to get the ball rolling!

that would be great Kieran, thanks. wouldnt it be better if it was closed down for repairs or even if the area was sectioned off, for the safety of the kids. ud think the council would fix it up sooner rather then later to save themselves from nagging or even from a compo case!!

there must be something within the material they use for the flooring if Kierans seen holes in 2 other playgrounds....

Morning Shell...I bet if some parent contacts the local papers to say....little mary or peter had a bad fall while playing and the council are responsible......mmmm!!

One photo shoot....one good reporter gets in contact with town manager.....ahh!! and the repair may get done sooner than later......Suns out again on Tyneside..hope its the same in lovely Cobh.....cheers Katy:)

My impression was that it was vandalism because in one of the english ones I saw, part of the rubber seat on a swing was half torn away. I just had a thought Shell, There might be an outside chance that the council still has a warantee with the contractors. If that is the case, they will have it repaired in special quick time (wont have to spend themselves). Either way, we'll get a photo of the damage, and I will bring it up at Mondays meeting!

Mike

A write up might help as well....Ahem...Shell...........

Ooooohh!!:D And what about your local Radio Station....at this time of the year....all media links /papers /radio/television....are looking for human interest stories, mmmm!!

Now picture the scene and the thought of some wee bairn falling down, crying, non stop:eek: , parents getting frantic....grandmothers getting upset......ahh!! Ned can you write up a story out of the above saga......to be sure you can......((Hugs)) Shell truly hope it gets sorted out quickly, and Kierans right, hope Council meeting goes okay. cheers Katy:)

We called down last night, to take some pictures and low and behold, I found two holes that some plonker working for the council had filled in with ordinary tar-macaddam. I also found a small section where I was able to fold it back like a carpet, there is going to be mega problems there further down the road i reckon. But earlier today being the scorcher it is, I took my two daughters down there for a hour. There was one Polish family ahead of us. Because of the heat, all the kids took their shoes off. Each time they made contact with the Councils tar-macaddam they were distroyed as it stuck to them. My youngest one came home with black feet. Should be fun at Monday nights meeting!

That sounds awful guys. Almost laughed out loud at the Irishness of council lads filling in the specially laid ground material with tarmac. I'd rather see it closed for a while and fixed properly than have kids getting injured.

Kieran
09-09-2007, 08:16
I'm only guessing that it was the council who filled it with tar, god who else would try it?

Funny thing happened there. We had our dog with us. He was drooling in the extreme heat so we went over to the strand on the way home so he could cool off in the water. My girls decided to paddle in the tide themselves, and believe or not, it washed all the tar from their feet. What does that tell you about the state of our harbour. My older sister is presently home on holidays from OZ. She went out there to Whitepoint for a swim the other day, no one tipped her off about the condition of the harbour, she thought it was still like the 1960's. She dived in off the slip-way and just as she was about to put her face under, some guy on the shore shouted "dont put your face under" but it was too late. lesson learned!

That thought crossed my mind too Ned, she probably needs to see a bit of the world and see for herself that others are just the same as us, but that doesnt excuse the council for whats happening at Whitepoint. Anyway Ned, what are you getting excited about, your an Ozy! lol

North -South -East - West and Downunder, who cares!

The good news from Town Hall is that a new surface for the playground is already ordered/ I was assured last night that the tarmac was only a temporary measure. We all knew that, but how temporary was the big question. Had a feeling that my prepared condemnation was expected last night, with some ready prepared answers waiting for me. Guess I'm not the only councillor who reads the mails on this site! In my Ned Kelly-like speech from the Dock, I also called on the Council to strongly consider and prepare for the playground to be extended to accomodate the growing demand of the towns people, atleast one councillor Noireen Doyle supported that call!

Firefly we await your explanation on *irishness*

shell07
11-09-2007, 11:52
well at least the council are talking about it....how long it'l take is another matter. cant believe they filled it with tarmac!!!

i def think the playground could be extended, it doesnt even have a swing!! if theres any bit of a crowd down there theres no room to run around. and theres plenty of room to extend.

Has anyone every been to the playground up by the Rising Tide in Glouthane? Plenty of room, stuff for the big kids and the little ones, everything is spaced out and theres loads of room to run around. only thing i would have to say about there is that there is a lack of seating for the parents

Are you still looking for a showdown with firefly over that 'Oirish' comment Ned? Listening to local redio thismorning, you would have many to contend with after the footballers performance last night!

Ned Kelly
14-09-2007, 11:51
Firefly has flew off somewhere?

Kieran
14-09-2007, 14:16
Leave the girl alone, just a vicitm of her peers and her generation with the lingo. Its different for we old fogies who remember the racist implications of such comments!

Ned Kelly
15-09-2007, 12:02
I'm sure she'll love your patronising tone!

Kieran
15-09-2007, 15:12
We'll I could have agreed entirely with you and insulted her Ned. Na'h I honestly believe theres a world of difference between our generation who suffered under such taunts with racist undertones and Irish people who willingly ridiculed their own race, and innocent comments of some young people today who just repeat a particular lingo!

Ned Kelly
21-09-2007, 11:35
Did you mean Irish folk are taking the piss out of themselves now????
Nothing innocent about perpetuating a myth that a lot of racists actually believe and use to their own advantage, I ain't having it mo chara and those who are Irish or of Irish heritage should not either!

Kieran
21-09-2007, 14:35
What do you mean are they taking the piss out of themselves now? Where have you been Ned, they have been at it for as long as I'm around and understood thats what you have been on about all the time. I refer to the Terry Wogans, Frank Carsons, Gay Byrnes etc, etc. Those people who feel the English will have more respect for them if they take the P out of their race -I guess there is some truth in their twisted logic as some later go on to recieve a knighthood. (it probably helps them live longer)

Ned Kelly
22-09-2007, 10:47
Methinks ya missed the point once again mo chara!

Kieran
22-09-2007, 20:56
Must have!

Katy
22-09-2007, 21:01
Ooooohh! and for what its worth Terry Wogan, drives me to distraction.....over here ...not only is he on radio, tv, but his voice is on lots of adverts...aaahh!! Katy sure is not a fan of his.....:(

Kieran
23-09-2007, 10:00
Join the club Katy. I think Limerick has even disowned him!

Katy
24-09-2007, 00:27
I think next time Wogan is sent to cover Eurovision Song Comp, they should get him to retire full time........ Katy

Kieran
24-09-2007, 11:20
They should get him to sing for the UK, then we'd all be shot of him!

Ned Kelly
24-09-2007, 11:51
Who's a Wog?

Katy
24-09-2007, 21:42
LOL.....send in Flo to sort out Wogan.....LOL:)

Kieran
25-09-2007, 17:25
Good News folks, I was down at the Whit-Point play ground today, The conractors were just leaving after repairing the surface there! See Ned- Moaning works! -Save our Harbour Now!

Firefly
25-09-2007, 23:06
Wow! My ears were burning.....! Didn't mean to cause a hassle by saying Irishness. Meant it was most of a laziness issue i suppose. When I heard the hole had been filled with tarmac, I had a Killnascully type image in my head, of a few fellas with shovels staring at the hole, trying to figure out how best to deal with it, before tossing a few scoops of tarmac on it, and patting each other on the back for a job well done.

Not saying it doesn't happen all over the world, it certainly does, but I wasn't referring to a playground in France, I was talking about Cobh. If thats perpetuating a racist myth, I'll make my apologies, but I certainly didn't see it as that. It was an off the cuff remark, no insult intended to anyone.:)

Kieran
26-09-2007, 08:52
I thought the tar-mac was a joke, not because it was the lazy way out, but because it created a bigger problem from the wee one that was there. Tac-mac sticks to shoes and feet. Its not soft and wouldnt protect if a child fell on it. I dont know how weeks have passed since we first made noise about it, but its sorted!
