Poor Ned must have the hankies out while you're teasing him with those pictures of home. We were in the the old yacht club/Sirius centre the other night for the launch of the maritime festival. Its a massive building. The place was full of Polish people. It was hard to know which of them was over for the festival and which actually live in Cobh now. some good musicians though!

I'd say that one on the left above brings back some memories Ned. You would probably best remember it in the 60's from all the fish and trawlers outside on the quays. I'm told there used to be a bar there up to the mid 60's but I dont remember that. I do remember a sweet and news paper shop there though. Second Picture is of the Waters Edge hotel which has come under new ownership in the last year -a nice place. Ang and I spent our wedding night there not too long ago. I'm sure you know Connie Doolans Ned, the old Oval Bar. Then that big mystery building 'Pillars' the owners spent a fortune renovating and sound proofing the place, then shut it down. You would remember it as the old Ramblers Dance Hall. (Happy memories I'm sure). Locals believe they had to close it down because a certain local hotelier family flexed its political influence to block competition and a late night bar licence (may or may not be true). If it is, it might help you see why the town is stuck in a hole! Well done Katy -you're doing better than Google with those pics!

I can remember haulin a huge fish up from the trawlers down the deepwater quay, It was a big as meself, no messin. It trailed behind me over my shoulder as i carried it up the station steps and then up the burmas, I was knackered by the time I reached home and fish scales all over me, me dad was waitin at the gate and the look in his eyes made me proud as hell! It fed us and the neighbours for a week!:)

Kieran

fullastern
04-01-2008, 10:41
Well it's gone from freezing to bucketing down cats and dogs here in Cobh today - with a force 9 Gale blowing too. And it's still quite cold. So enjoy yourself Ned. You could fry an egg - if you had an egg - and Sally O'Brien and the way she might look at you! (for those old enough to remember a television ad for Harp Lager about 25-30 years ago).

Katy
04-01-2008, 14:30
Lol.....Fry an egg!!......aaahh!! Ned, you could send John and I a Bacon and Egg butty....with a hot mug of tea....truly its bloody freezing.....oohh!! John post a few sunshine pics.....or maybe we should send Ned pics of the Rain.......lol....what do you think......cheers Katy:)

The old Harp Ad, you wont find that in many bars now, unless you go up North for a pint!

fullastern
05-01-2008, 10:25
Harp was terrible stuff, would cut the guts out of you. Had a pint in Belfast a few months ago 'cos the Guinness wasn't up to scratch and it nearly killed me. No wonder Christy Moore called it Harpic!

Hi Ned and all:)

Found some pics of Ned relaxing as we are all in the midst of winter....oohh!!

Australia; Up to 13 cyclones could batter the country during the storm season because a mature La Nina now exists over the Pacific, experts warned yesterday.

So enjoy your beach party Ned but you made need some waterproofs soon......cheers Katy;)

Thanks for warming us all up with your thoughts Katy and for the virtual summer weather from Ned. It was very cold this morning but brightened up later on before turning wet again - typical Irish weather.

Here's some more Cobh summer photos - all recent - taken within last 2 years by yours truly.

Kieran - looking forward to seeing Inside Cobh - Didn't see one in my local shop this week though, take it you mean the one out this Wednesday? Will keep that one as a souvenir! Just an idea, what about an Inside Cobh website with back issues and the old photos - or is there a copyright problem to be overcome?

Katy - Glad people enjoyed the pics. I'm just showing off my new scanner which can scan directly from negatives - and I've got hundreds of them going back to when I got my first camera around 1974 - some older even. I'm sure you'll like the latest batch (attached). Taken about 2 years ago at the Promenade. The dog isn't mine, just a local who loves people to throw a stick in the water for him to fetch.

Ned - that looks like the outback. Hope you're not plagued with venomous snakes and the like, one thing we don't have to worry about here in Cobh - unless someone's pet cobra escapes. I heard there was a snake found in someone's bathroom in the town a few years ago. Of course we have kangaroos up in Fota.

Thats me pride and joy that shed K, I do a hell of a lot of DIY in there.

Hi there Katy. My maritime blog got a lot of coverage earlier this month when the various storm incidents took place. I got people clicking on the blog from all over the world, especially Germany where the sailing ship was registered.

Unfortunately I don't have any more old photos of Cobh except this one of me walking my dog on the railway bridge 24 years ago:eek: . As you know I'm only a "blow in" so my photos are confined to occasional visits and most of the time I didn't have a camera with me. Kieran and Angela should have lots of old photos from the weekly Inside Cobh look back at oldtime photos.

All those Hugs are making me dizzy!

Katy
30-03-2008, 02:23
Hi Fulla, great news about the global coverage of your site,.......well done....:) Each time we have been over to Cobh and other parts of Ireland, Katy goes crazy with her camera......friends have passed on some old pics of the town and other places.....so sometime I can try and do a 'Then and Now' slide show.......:)
Meanwhile you know what they say a ((((Hug))) a day keeps the Doc away.lol.....and in our case with it still being winter......helps to make the sky blue......bbbrrr!!! clocks go forward tonight....magic..summer just around the corner........;) ;) cheers Katy

Katy

The "then and now" idea is great Katy. There's a programme on the Irish language television station TG4 called "Cartai Poist" (postcards) where they get an Irish speaking 'celebrity' and give them a camera and there old commercial postcards of different places around Ireland and the person has to find the exact place where that photo was taken and if possible to get some of the people who were in the original photo, which could have been taken 40 years ago and get them to re-enact what they were doing in the original postcard photo. (the programme is sub-titled in English too) There's an English-language article on the TG4 site below which gives you an idea of what it's about.

http://www.tg4.ie/Bearla/inte/cp/cp.htm

I was woken this morning at half six by the rumble of thunder although it didn't look like that kind of weather when I looked out the window. Hope it brightens up soon.

I saw a pic of Mollie in a snowstorm once. She looked really frozen and the snow had lodged in her cleavage (not the mention the baskets).

Katy

LOL.give over guys......our poor 'Mollie' out in all weathers.lol.....could you not see the goosebumps.......lol......someone should put a football hat and scarf on the wee lass.lol.then take a picture...;)

Fulla that looks like one brilliant link .off to make a cupa then check it out.((hugs)) if you find any other sites like that, please do pass them on.
The 'Then and Now' idea I have had for a while, same with old views of my home town..lol.truly you have no idea how many pics I have..aahh!!

Many moons ago I did exhibitions showing our old towns views......also some of other areas around the North East of UK..while I loved doing it, some folk thought it was easy to show the photos...ooohh!!! sometimes it took me months to get things organised....anyway glad you liked my idea .cheers Katy:)
