Have to say I totally enjoyed reading the Trip Down Memory Lane article by Paul Barry (Aka. Well. We'll say nothing) Brought back a few memories with a few laughs thrown in.

Even though I enjoyed the read I was a bit annoyed that the author neglected to include the great 70's early 80's series, 'Chips'. Man that was good. Never missed an episode. Shame on you Mr Barry. Shame on you.

Rock on 'Punch' & 'Baker' http://www.chips-tv.com/

Its just that I remember Mike going around with that big motor bike with a fake siren on it, always cruising by the female of the spicies!

Ned Kelly

Anywan remember the Top o the Hill festival at CBC?

Kieran
06-02-2007, 17:45
3 things stand out in my mind about the toppa festival.

1. Con Brierly's mother (RIP)was one of the main organisers of it.
2. Myself and Denis Twomey came 1st and 2nd in the banana eating contest.
3. I had a mongrel dog 'Bruce' that won the dog show which was judged by Charles Mitchell (RIP) a then newsreader for RTE.

The festival died out and was then revived again in the late 80s/90s by Paddy Kidney and others but fell by the wayside again. Those were the days!

Or as Joe Murphy would have said!!! Welcome one an all to the Top o the Hill *Fevtival*!! sic!
I remember when the outside basketball court was built, They could'nt get us off it for weeks even when it was dark!
Well done Bernie o' Brien and Co!

Mike

I remember I won the 'Crisp Eating' competition. Can't remember my exact age (sure the mother will though). They couldn't figure out how a young fella like meself won against all the older kids, until they looked under the table and saw all the half eaten packets on the ground http://www.cobhnet.com/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif

Ned Kelly
08-02-2007, 09:09
Eoghan sent me some Taytos recently from the aul sod, 6 packets, I ate the lot in wan day, the best crisps in the world for sure!

Mike
08-02-2007, 09:43
Taytos between two slices of fresh Abbers (not Abbos Ned) and a nice cup of tea............. can't beat it

Kieran
08-02-2007, 11:13
Far from Taytos and Abbers you were reared Mike. The only reason you won that competiton in the Toppa festival was because you never tasted crisps before and you were half starved! lol

Mullie
09-02-2007, 04:01
A good bag of Tayto would go down well now with son fresh bread from seanie the bread man, and also some cakes, witch we would get the next day. as seanie could not see them, can any one tell me his helper on the round? Laura

Kieran
09-02-2007, 08:34
He was Tim Ware from the 52's. I remember when they used to deliver the bread in the horse and wagon. Then when the motor van came in, the real fun began. Sometimes when Seanie would be delivering the bread into some house, we would egg Tim on to drive the van. A couple of times he tried and the van would end up in the field where Ringmeen estate is now. Infact, I'm sure it once got bogged down where our Mikes sitting room would later be built!

Ned Kelly
09-02-2007, 09:55
Tim the gull?
I remember me mam sending me out with a bucket and spade to pick up the horse crap for the roses!
I also remember when the horse and cart ran over Toltons dog and killed it!
If my memory serves me right it was a lil balck and white terrier!
Sad day for everyone including Seanie and Tim!

Katy

Do any of you remeber Tim or Dan Bowen (not sure of his first name) -the man that used to bring a big tray of buns to the school cocoa house each morning from O'Reilly's bakery down town. They are all gone now! - Dan, the bakery and certainly the buns! :D

Ned Kelly

I was at the local GAA dinner dance at the Commodore on friday night and bumped into an old neighbour of mine at the bar. We got talking about the old days and the Assumption place reunion of a few years ago. I happened to mention that a few ex-pats were communicating on this site about a West-End reunion and he thought the idea was great. Is there any update on this reunion guys?

Ned Kelly
12-02-2007, 09:13
I hate to say it Kieran and all but myself won't be there as much as I'd love to be, I just started me own little business and I can't see meself giving myself any holliers this year at the very least, since I'm a one man band and theres no one to replace me and they could'nt do it anyway without a months training but hopefully if I expand the biz a lil bit I might be able to delegate!:(

Kieran
12-02-2007, 12:45
Thats good Ned, I mean good that you are working for yourself. Perhaps when you start brining in the serious dollars, you'l be able to give us all a visit, though you know what they say, it takes 2-3 years before any new business comes into it's own!

Ned Kelly

Laura, Glasses or No Glasses, Ned will always look ugly!

Ned Kelly
17-02-2007, 09:29

Kieran
24-02-2007, 09:08
The last that I heard of him, was that he was living in Birmingham but I think Ned might have had later contact with him in London! It amazes me how many Irish people long to visit home, while others couldnt bother if they never saw the place again!

Ned Kelly
24-02-2007, 10:15
Laura I met Gunner a couple of times in London a few years back and his sister Liz 1978 I believe it was! He had'nt changed much still the same ol Gunner, he was doing alright for himself, he was living in the Kilburn area, But its a long time ago and who knows whats happened since?

Hello and welcome Monica, you may not realise but many of our members live around the world.....(yourstruly UK) what with work, time differences etc, its rare when we are all on together. Not only that we have members like yourself who are ....a bit shy:) .....how about posting some basic info of yourself, ie, do you live in Ireland?.....what hobbies....likes or dislikes do you have?.
How did you find the link for Cobh site.....I found it after I had a holiday in Cobh, last year and wanted to find out more.....maybe you have also had a holiday in Ireland (if you live abroad..) what area did you visit?.
I do hope you post a reply or two...and if you like I can supply a host of Irish sites that move mega fast.....if thats what you want.
As I am into researching my family tree, I am a member of a few sites...and as you are new to forums, please do take care, as some are truly not user friendly......chat soon ....cheers Katy:)

Yep we are a bunch of boring ol farts, but we are contributing, baby boomers we might be but lets see some contribution from the xy generation! If yer not all too busy having a go at the folk who actually made it possible for you lot to have a great life. We had it hard mo chara , teachers were actually allowed to belt the shite out of us. we got hungry as in we did'nt get enough food, we had to steal fruit as our parents could not earn enough to feed us 3 meals a day! Clothes were hand me downs, Games were played in the streets not on a computer. We had to work for what we got, I got sixpence a week for my chores (not six new pence) It was a shilling to go to the gaffs, that took 2 weeks of my pocket money I did'nt ask for any more because I knew My parents did'nt have it.
My first job at 15 was as a laundry boy i worked 6 and a half days a week for 6 pounds 26 pence a week and handed over 5 pounds to my mam!
So, sorry if you are bored with us! We never had a life but we made one, for us and our kids ! Our children are now reaping the rewards of our hard work!

Kieran
26-02-2007, 10:46
Jazus Ned, there I was trying to be a bit diplomatic, and you come out and smacked the girl with all that and without gloves on. I dont think she would know what the gaffs were Ned, and I find when I try to tell my own off-springs about our past hardships, they just look at me, with a facial expression that says 'Get Real'! But you were right about everything you said Ned!

Ned Kelly
27-02-2007, 09:35
Sorry for that rant folks, But it gets up me feckin nose when todays generation says we're bored, Bored how are ya, we were too feckin busy survivin to be bored!

Who has read Roy keanes latest interview in the examiner. Read it myself thismorn. Poor Stan must have lost his eyesight because Roy 's interview was meant to be about the guide dogs but was entirely taken up with Stan and FAI bashing. I initially found myself agreeing with everything he was saying until the very last paragraph when he said, people should recognise the pressures people like Stan are under and give them some space. He also admitted that Stan had tried to make contact but they keep missing each other. Finally, when asked if he'd like Stans Job, he did something he never did before, he failed to give a straight answer. Snuff Said-Ned!

Ned Kelly
22-03-2007, 08:57
I thought the interview was surprisingly honest from Roy the Boy, a hell of a lot of what he said was true and even got a laugh out of him!
He's the boy for the job, no messin! Even if he is from mayfield!

Kieran
22-03-2007, 10:35
Good and commonsense-like yes Ned, Honest -No way. As I said, I found myself agreeing with most of what he was saying, especially in relation to the Irish Rugby and cricket squads and of the present FAI mindsets, but then he said things with betrayed his dishonest side. He spoke of Eddie O'Sullivan looking after Cork and Munster players in the Irish Squad, and hinted that he would favour Cork Players over others if he had the job. In other words, he would counter the Dublin bias by introducing Cork bias. Fuck that Ned, Players should get their places on merit regardless of what part of the country the hail from. If the best 11 players happen to come from Dublin, Cork or Kerry they should be picked. But only a really honest and practical manager would think like that. I suspect Roy the boy is playing to the Cork audience here for other reasons. Good, even brilliant Ned, but certainly not honest. Stan -useless, pathetic stupid -but noone can call him dishonest. I guess theres no room for honesty in this game!

Ned Kelly
23-03-2007, 09:27
Ya Could be right there mo chara, but its the results that count!
Anything to give the jackeens a kick in the bum, there all west brits anyhow, beyond the pale and all that they were never beyond the pale they were right in the feckin middle of it, the rest of us were beyond the pale, not them!

Kieran
24-03-2007, 09:00
Ya Ned but that 'Paled' into insignificance in 1916 when they were the only ones that turned out for duty! -All is forgiven. ( I know thats not entirely true and the rest of the country turned out at easter week also but were sent home agagin, but the Dubs put up a great fight and surpassed everyones expectations. Research for my book, recently brought me into contact with a document which showed that an armoured railway car was under construction in the boiler shop at the naval dockyard at Houlbowline. It was meant to be used against rebel forces involved in the Rising, but was not completed in time, or the Rising was surpressed first, which ever way you want to look at it. I have to say also Ned, I have many great friends from the Pale that I came into contact through the R Movement over the years, and they are nothing like the Jackeens we grew up with around Cobh via the Navy!

Ned Kelly
24-03-2007, 09:50
Yah fair nuff, K i was generalising a bit too much, Can't get it out me head tho from the michael collins film when all those moore street ol bags were givin the republicans shite and saying lave us alone we were doin alright till u feckers started stirrin the pot!

Kieran
24-03-2007, 12:42
Thats all true Ned, but it happened everywhere including Cobh. Wait til you read my book. A gang of Redmondite Volunteers were gathered outside the railway station in Cobh chatting, when a policeman came over and told them of the rising that just broke out in the capital. Their immediate response was to ask the policeman what they could do to help the British to supress the rebels. One man present who did not agree with his friends was a lad named Michael Burke from Donelan Terrace. By 1920 Burke would be masterminding ambushes and overseeing gaol breaks etc, but one interesting thing he wrote years later, was that almost everyone who condemed the Rising from outside the railway station that day in 1916, went on to fight with him and the IRA later!

Kieran,
The one thing i dont grow is roses..but I have great neighbours who pass a few on every other week when they are in bloom ....so I cheat take photos, and use them to make cards...or have as wallpaper on the computer....still trying to work out how to make them into screensavers......Katy

PS, the little picture was taken in Cobh with my mobile then emailed home....who needs those cameras...ahh!! click on photo and it will enlarge.....

Kieran
28-03-2007, 08:57
That picture of the old Town Hall is in the news here again. Many locals feel the adjoining jetty should be developed to accomondate the towns parking problems. Its currently up for sale and is also condemed, so its not clear who would be prepared to buy and develop it. There will have to be some serious action taken soon with the parking problem though.

Ned Kelly
28-03-2007, 11:26
The Town Hall condemned? Surely there must be a preservation order on a building that has served the Cobh community for so many years?
All that hot air will keep it up without any scaffolding!

Just to have to tell ye I have not bring to good myself. BP very High. over the last five week we have 3 death, over hear and just hear from cobh that paudie sister maura has a brean toumer. I know my own son was born with a toumor. but can any one tell me what what is going on in cobh also Arklow where so many people have cancer?. NET?

Kieran
06-04-2007, 09:27
Ya Laura, NET/IFI was the common dinominator with Cobh and Arklow. Now that its gone, doesnt really change anything as we still have a cocktail of chemical industries around the Harbour. I know there was a doctor couple (the Dunphy's) based in Carrigaline some years ago who used to monitor the various cancer paterns of patients around the harbours communities. I think they came up against a brick wall because other doctors (conservatives) wouldnt share their data with them, and werent prepared to rock any boats!

Ned Kelly
06-04-2007, 10:43
Sorry to hear yer not feeling the best Laura, Do you take any medication for lowering your Bp?
Cocktail of chemicals in the harbour I spose there always was even in my time. Ireland was always glad of any industry to set up there so obviously there very few safeguards if any put in place. I can remember when Pfizer was started any waste they had was put on ships and dumped out to sea and more than likely to come back into the harbour on the next tide!
Irish Steel just did what they wanted to without question for years and then sold to an Indian company who were not known for their interest in the environment. Raw sewage being pumped into the harbour for generations can't have helped either, it goes on and on I'm surprised any of us are left to still talk about it!

Katy

Hi De Hi...everyone......can anyone give me an update on the old Council Offices in Cobh (see pic)....please , please tell me someone is going to smarten the place up, its such a shame to see buildings just being left to decay......cheers Katy:)

Is that Bar Titanic I think thats what they call it, is it open now:D

fullastern
22-08-2007, 08:15
Hi Jo. The Titanic Bar is still closed. I'm not sure if and when it'll ever re-open. As for the old Town Hall it was occupied temporarily during the summer by the Youth group while their own premises on Midleton street was being renovate but it's empty again now. It was up for auction a few months ago but as far as I know it wasn't sold. Maybe Kieran has more up to date info on both buildings.

Kieran
22-08-2007, 08:22
Yip, the council has approved the sale to the highest offer it recieved after a very long drawn out sale process. I understand the would -be buyer has plenty of dosh and has big plans to utilise the building and the adjoining quayside for some harbour related activity! As for the Titanic bar, No that hasnt been raised yet!

Also discovered that my local, Connie Doolan's is up for sale. Hope this doesn't go the way of the Daunt, Admiral, Welcome Inn, etc.
