Read this letter in the Examiner this mornin. Its fair comment in my humble opinion! Lets hope the bubble never busts folks because it could get ugly!

How will immigrants fare in declining economy?

THE other morning here in Seattle, National Public Radio ran a piece on what the reporter referred to, in a quizzical tone, as the flood of immigration into Ireland in the last five years.

The reporter’s tone implied a mystery as to the reason, but to your readers it is no such thing.

That aside, it is reported there is now an area in the centre of Dublin called Little Africa — home to hundreds of Nigerians — and that there are 150,000 Polish and 80,000 Chinese immigrants currently in Ireland, and that there are 40,000 new immigrants every year.

A young Polish woman was interviewed in Dublin. She said it was hard to meet an Irish person as you walked down Grafton Street. The reporter went on to say there were few incidents of tension between the Irish and the new immigrants.

Clearly, he did not venture outside the Pale during his visit. However, all of this makes me ask — what happens when (not if) the economy slows down and unemployment rises from the blissful 4% at which it currently stands? What will happen to all the new immigrants when the jobs go? How will the Irish treat them then?

How will the Government deal with the swelling ranks of the unemployed, both Irish and immigrant, when the economy slows down in the near future?

Will it become like America in the 1930s, where there were signs stating ‘No blacks and no Irish need apply’?

That was how American employers dealt with the crisis. I wonder if there will be signs in shop windows in Ireland saying ‘Only Irish need apply’, or will we simply be deafened once again by the heartbreaking sound of dusty suitcases being unzipped?

I'm just listening to a woman on radio who was ripped off in a car scam by a guy who told her his from Cobage. She kept asking him from where? and then realised he was saying Cobh. 'Motor help UK'. I agree with the letter writer Ned and You and I went through this before so theres no point in playing our scrathced record again. I agree in principle with sharing the spoils of our little boom with those worse off, but i also see that our me fein government has made absolutely no plans for the big bang when it comes, and it will come. To change the subject a little, I just heard a christmas advert on the radio for Silversprings Moran Hotel. Fuck, I didnt go on my summer hols yet! -K :o

Yes K we have went through it lad, I know I keep harping on about it ,But I can't help meself, I have seen it happen so many times in various places and i just don't want Ireland to have to go down the road of so many other countries that found themselves in the same situation. I know its easy for me to say here sitting on me arse on the other side of the world but for christs sake folks be careful and don't rush into things like others have done!

I dont know Ned, you and I and others might feel a little less frustrasted by mouthing off here on line, but it wont make a blind bit of difference to those making the decisions. They will still do their own thing. I read yesterday in Irelands only uncensored paper that the guys who won the case for fecking up the US war plane at shannon are recruiting members of the public for one big push to shut down shannon to its role as a war facilitator. They are advirtising that they will act under the principles of Gandi and Martin Luther King. You might have read that the court and jury found that its lawful under International law to damage property if you can prove it was intended to save lives. These guys seem to be people who can effectively undermine their governments actions and do it within the law. Its funny these days how in the mainstream world opinion making outlets, those for war are regarded as the wise and the righteous and those against are regarded as the upstarts. I also read that the Government here has confirmed that no Isreali army personel are currently attending the UN military training school at the Curragh. A Sinn Fein TD had kicked up about Isreali personel being trained there in 2002. It seems our Government can get embarrassed at times. -K
