NIALL QUINN will become manager of Sunderland if he doesn't land any of the names on the short-list his consortium has drawn up for the dug-out role.
Quinn and his Irish backers have drawn up a list of potential managers which is believed to include former Celtic boss, and Sunderland fan, Martin O'Neill.
But their trump card is knowing that they can call on Quinn to take the hot seat if they don't manage to land one of their wish list.
They've reached agreement to buy the majority shareholding of chairman Bob Murray but it will take up to six weeks to complete the due diligence process.
Only when that is done can the [ch8364]100m deal, which includes a guarantee to clear the club's substantial debts, go through and the changing of the guard take place.
"I've always wanted Niall to buy the club from me, and I've gone all out to get what I want," said Murray. "Niall cares deeply about the club and the people of Sunderland as I do. We discussed the size of the club, its fantastic support, the brand, the stadium and the academy."
