My morning rant

Irish Business Against Litter are at it again. Once again they have branded Cobh the dirtiest town in Ireland.

Now I wouldn't argue with them that Cobh has a problem - it most certainly has, but I travel around Ireland quite a lot and there are many towns as bad, if not worse than Cobh in the litter stakes.

Not surprisingly Fermoy comes out in the top 10 cleanest towns again, sure why wouldn't it, isn't "Dr" Tom Cavanagh, local business, chamber of commerce and everything else-man from Fermoy. Cavanagh seems to take particular delight into denigrating Cobh. I mean who appointed him in the first place - himself!

Yes Cobh has a litter problem and needs to deal with it, but if you ask me an even bigger problem is the derelict sites owned by business people around the town. I for one am getting sick of Cavanagh's attacks on this town.

Cork and Cobh are rated dirtiest
by TIM O'BRIEN

CORK IS Ireland's most littered city and nearby Cobh its dirtiest town, according to the latest survey carried out for Ibal, the Irish Business Against Litter campaign.

The survey - the second carried out by An Taisce for Ibal this year - also brought disappointing news for Tullamore, Co Offaly.

The town, which had protested its position as one of Ireland's blackspots in the previous survey in June, has retained a ranking as "seriously littered", alongside Cobh and Bray, Co Wicklow.

But there was good news overall with "spectacular improvements" recorded in litter levels across the State.

The survey ranked Cavan as the cleanest town in the Republic with the status: "Clean to European norms".

The judges also made special mention of Galway. In a result described as "spectacular", it achieved second place on the list, the highest achieved to date by a city in the Ibal survey.

In common with Galway, Limerick and Waterford were also rated "litter free", or "clean to European norms".

Dublin was only slightly behind, being classified as "moderately littered".

Chewing gum was once again a major source of litter, the survey found, with over 50 tonnes of it dropped on streets annually. Ibal, an alliance of companies set up in 1996 to campaign for a litter-free environment, has called for the implementation of a tax on chewing gum, forcing manufacturers to produce biodegradable chewing gum.

"Chewing gum is the largest blight on our streets with over 50 tonnes dropped on the streets annually," said Ibal chairman Dr Tom Cavanagh.

"It stays there as it cannot be swept up. Ibal would like to see the implementation of a tax on chewing gum, forcing manufacturers to produce biodegradable chewing gum and the polluter to pay."

Overall the Ibal survey indicated an improvement in cleanliness standards in Irish towns, with 60 per cent of towns now clean to European norms - the highest percentage recorded.

All 55 towns with a population of 6,000 or over were surveyed, and of these 33 achieved the "European norms" standard.

"Ibal's experience is that once a town achieves litter-free status for two to three years, it tends to stay clean," said Dr Cavanagh.

He said it was particularly disappointing to see Cobh at the bottom of the league, as it was a harbour town welcoming about 70,000 tourists from visiting luxury cruise liners every summer.

"Greeting tourists with litter and weeds creates a very poor first impression of Ireland", he said. "It is all the more disappointing as Cobh, with its beautiful setting, has enormous potential."

If theres any truth In the statement that Cobh is the dirtiest town in the Republic?
WTF is going on? Are there any litter wardens, are there any fines for littering are the fines being enforced? Are dogs still crapping where they like with nobody givin a shit *excuse the pun*
Cobh a tourist town?
The only future for Cobh is that of a tourism oriented centre, Industry is gone and will not come back!
Its either clean up your act or just become another satellite suburb of the city with nothing for local residents!

I agree with you Ned. Incidentally there is just one Litter Warden in the town and his primary function is as the towns sole Traffic Warden. I think he was on sick leave some time ago and there was neither a traffic nor litter warden in the town.

I think they want to visit Youghal, when we went in June, start of the tourist season the place was a mess....okay some building/road works going on in parts, but all in all the whole town needs a good cleaning.
The bit that made me angry was that the civic building, was looking pretty good...shame they cant get the rest of the town the same......:confused:cheers Katy

Hi Ned, for a long while we were told that Youghal had lots to offer, to be true the best bits I took photos , and while it had taken me two years to get to see the place....aahh!! it was such a let down.
They have this wee park as you go into the town, and its not a patch on the Kennedy Memorial Park, overlooking Cobh Harbour. So unless Youghal gets the paint pots and cleaning squads out, they do some major repairs etc. This wee lass will not be going back....cheers Katy:)

Afraid I have to stand up for Youghal folks. Yes it has its faults but it has some great history too. It also has a large section of its original walls intact with massive views over the town from them. They can be reached either from the back of town or through the grounds of St. Mary's Collegiate Church.
There are some lovely buildings around the town with a great mix of different architectural styles.

Some of the buildings need to be renovated and the narrowness of the streets, while charming, makes it a traffic nightmare (notwithstanding the bypass).

I'd still prefer Cobh any day but Youghal isn't all that bad and has a lot going for it!

Some photos of Youghal.

:)Hi Fulla, great photos of Youghal, I have similar shots in my collection. and they show the same as yours all the best bits...
Truly the streets in June this year, needed a good clean....many of the buildings on the main street through Youghal was a disgrace. What does it take to wash windows, use a hosepipe to clean off the paint work on offices/shops, then get paint out ...and in general take a sweeping brush and sweep the streets.
I feel so sorry for those working in heritage/history centre, who are promoting the towns rich history. And I must mention the brilliant Moby Dick Pub,service great and the craic magic. (Lunch mmm!! mega magic)

Some shops who have taken the time and trouble to make the front of their business presentable, do deserve a pat on the back....and a lot of praise. but the majority of the towns buildings need a good clean.....First chance you get call by Youghal, view it with the eyes of a visitor.....This is the first time in all my Ireland visits, that the pre-tourist info on a town (Youghal) was more than misleading.
Sorry Fulla if you have friends in Youghal, but its not a patch on Cobh, and look at the bad crit Cobh got recently....oohh!! Who I wonder did the report....:confused:cheers Katy

I have to disagree with ya Fulla, Youghal has always been a one street town and to me it always looked filthy, we used to go for days out there when we were kids and I even thought the same then!

oh I'm not offended, some of what you say is true, but I still think Youghal has a lot going for it - Cobh still wins by several miles!

A few points to made here guys.
Cobh has points deducted every time the Judges visit because of whats washed up at the front cambers with each tide -Not justified. Tom Kavanagh from Fermoy the head of IBAL should know better when one considers that his home town is nearly under water alot in the winter. Should Fermoy lose points when that happens?
Then you have Cobh council managers and business leaders/tourism hiding behind this injustice as an excuse to do nothing. Cobh is filthy and many of its citizens still dump illegally -no getting away it. I keep calling on them to scrap the parking revenue and start issuing fines for litter instead but I;m speaking to deaf ears. But there is no way on earth that it is the dirtiest town in Ireland or this state. Youghals main street is a plain dreary street but Ned, you clearly havant been there for a while. It has improved in other ways with some first class developments including a lovely promenade. Still doesnt match Cobh though!

:)Hi Kieran, just keeping pushing those who are responsible for that yuky report on towns ...Cobh is by far better than Youghal....with a trillion things to offer visitors...At home we have same problems with illegal dumping in scenic spots....now that the dark nights are drawing in it gets worse.
The crazy thing is they can take furniture etc to a community re-cyle plant for free....instead what do they do but dump the items....oohh!!
cheers Katy:)
