Three questioned after Cobh heroin find
Friday, 5 September 2008 07:33
Gardaí are questioning three men in connection with a drugs seizure in Co Cork yesterday.
Half a kilo of heroin with a street value of about €100,000 was recovered.
The men are being questioned at Cobh Garda Station.
I can't say I'm terribly surprised by this development but it shows that heroin is no longer just a problem in the major cities. It is only a few years ago since a leading Garda source in Cork claimed that there was no heroin in the city, apart from the occasional visitor from Dublin. Clearly the epidemic is nationwide and despite massive drug seizures there is still plenty getting through. Meanwhile a quarter of our navy have been sent up to Mayo to assist a multinational oil company impose its deadly oil refinery and pipeline on a small rural community. I have no doubt that the vast majority of the sailors have no wish to be there acting as defenders of the indefensible. Our government clearly has its priorities totally wrong.
