Saw the mackerel breaking at the Pier Head this morning - first time I've seen it this year. They could be around a while though, haven't been there for a fortnight or so.

Jasus me mouths waterin at the thought of the mackerel, best eating fish in the world I reckon, I musta ate thousands of them growin up in Cobh, july, august was always mackerel season, we'd be down the deepwater quay pulling them up 4 or 5 at a time with the feather hooks, what the family did'nt eat ya gave to yer neighbours and always heaps left over to sell from house to house at sixpence each!
Recipe... All ya had to do was take head and tail off, gut em, roll em in flour and fry em for a few mins on each side, delicious!
Hopefully there still edilble out of the harbour today???

I wouldn't be too sure of that Ned - hope they're not full of Chromium 6 - but I'd take a chance anyway as long as it's fresh. Saw them again last night off East Beach by the old tower.

Yeah ya might be right there fulla, I suppose if the sprats are still coming in the harbour and the mackerel chasing them, theres probably not too much wrong with them as long as yer not pulling them out of the water with 3 eyes or an extra fin?
Then again its probably like anything else , everything in moderation is not goin to do ya a lot of harm? I would'nt like to be eating them in the numbers we used to consume them 40 years ago!

Don't think you'll have to worry about that one Katy - I'm sure it's a computer mock-up with PhotoShop.
At least I hope it is.....
We dont get the macarel in the numbers we did before and I reckon there are well safe of the shite from Irish Steel. They just follow the sprat in the harbour and into the pan!
I saw them breaking only the other day. It's the first time I've seen scenes like that in 30 years. Promised my Son I'd buyt a rod and we'd go get some tomorrow.

Seem to be a lot of them about this year, compared to last. It's supposed to be a sign of good weather (we could do with a bit of that!). A nice fresh mackerel for dinner today would be lovely (though not for the mackerel it must be said).
The way all the weather seems to be all fucked up, they could still be breaking at Christmas!
:):)Suns out this morning.....oohh!! is this the calm before the next downpour.....hope its blue skies over Cobh.....:)cheers Katy

I think they're breaking their bums laughing at us! Fleeting sunshine yesterday, more rain today although the morning wasn't bad.
