View Full Version : Old Photos of Ireland
Has any members any old photographs of Ireland that they could post on site, now and then I get asked about Farming in Ireland, this is from friends doing their family research.
Photographs of buildings old cottages any thing that shows a past way of life in Ireland.
What about the fishing boats from the harbour, we must have some senior Cobh folk who can share a photo or two, and maybe a few memories. cheers Katy

The big problem here Katy is that most of the stuff available is copyrighted. Most family photos tend, naturally enough, to focus on the people in the photo, rather than places and very few people had good cameras until the 1950s or even later. It tended to be a specialist hobby before that.
There is a great collection of old photos on the Cork City Library website - most of them donated by the Cork Camera Club and family bequests collections - mostly scenes from old Cork city but some from east Cork too.

Some good snaps there Fulla, but Ballinacurra was the only ones outside the city. It was a busy place at the turn of the last century and was used by alot of Cobh people using the ferry on their way to east cork.
Hi Fulla, Kieran , Ned, thats a great link you posted Fulla, some friends who go to craft fairs and the like are keeping an eye out for any old postcard pics, of Ireland Views, I am waiting for a few at the minute, and will try and post on site......cheers Katy:)
Just a few Postcard Views...If you have any old Postcards of towns around Ireland, please do consider posting one or two below. cheers Katy

Thanks Katy for those.
I found another reference to old Cobh recently - a link to Slater's National Commercial Directory of Ireland for the town (still known as Cove then) from 1846. Interesting reading.
One question for the locals who might help - I know the old names for some of the streets such as that King Street is now O'Rahilly Street and Queen Street is Connolly Street, but there are a few I don't recognise including the following:-
Back Street
Church Hill - I think this is now Church Street, but where is Chapel St?
Chapel Street
Clarence Place
Wellington Place
Barrack Street - I'm assuming this is West View still known as Barrack Hill by older people
Can anyone help with these place names?
Hi Fulla, I will have a look through my reference books, and see if any info listed....meanwhile Kieran or Mike may have some details.....cheers Katy:)
PS, to be sure my achy bones say that white yuky stuff must be on its way soon....lol....:D

Yes, it's an unusual angle - most people photograph the other side because it's easier to access.
:)Hi fulla, sorry forgot to ask if you had found any more reference links or titles of books, that I can look at....by the way, hows the photography going....any other finds as you sort out...cheers Katy:)

I found this interesting list of links on history, old photos, etc and decided to post it here. I found it hidden away int he Cork City Council website but there are a few reference to Cobh in here too - especially in the old business directories. Lots of exploring to do in there:-
