I have heard that we are to have another name for Cobh... Paisleyville?
Any truth in it?
Believe it or not Ned, you seem to be the only person still thinking about Paisley, Cobh has certainly forgotten about him. But while on the subject of Cove-Queenstown and Cobh, it was very interesting how it all changed on I think 6th July 1920. The Sinn Fein controlled Council had three alternative names for the place and Cove-Cobh was always meant to be only a tempory measure. It was felt the people would later decide by plebacite of a new permanent name, but it never happened. I'm not going to give you the other names here -they will in the book when its released in September. I'm glad they were never used, though many visitors think the name Cob-H is a joke!

Well probably those who have no interest in the Irish language would think Cobh as a name sounds like a joke, Bh is a v sound in gaelige and if thats a problem for them well they can kiss my proud Irish arse!
As for paisleys visit to our town you all might have *forgotten* or maybe want to quickly forget that the antichrist stepped foot on hallowed ground and not only that but he was invited by our *leaders*

That may be true Ned but the word "cobh" does not come from the Irish language. It's a while since I did my Leaving Cert but I do remember some of my native language. The Irish for "Cove" is 'cuas', not cobh.
Yip, and the visitors I speaking of are not Irish people who pronounce the place 'Cobe'. All the Town Council corospondence for about the first 6 weeks after the name change had it simply as Cove as the pre-1849 name. I dont know why they came up with a half baked Irish version, especially as they themselves said it was only intended to be a tempory measure while the war lasted. But perhaps the civil war fecked things up and it was left to linger on for too long to change it again.

So what language does Cobh come from Fulla if not Irish? To give its full name, *An Cobh* I don't know how to do fadas but there should be one over the 0!
fullastern

It was an invented word Ned. Someone thought "Cove" didn't sound very Irish. Kieran will explain all in his new book. Technically it should be Cob (with a dot or buailte or sheimhu over the 'b'. My grandfather used to call it Cobbage.
I recieved a letter/note in the early 80's from and old 1930's republican (Jack Hartnett) from Carrigtwohill, and he addressed it Cob with a fada! I think thats how a lot of the old folk dealt with it. I'm told there are still alot of old people down West-Cork way who still call the place Queenstown. I know youll love that Ned, but maybe it should be twinned with the place of the same name in Oz, or Vicoria falls !

My father's parents always referred to Cobh as Queenstown, even though they were staunch republican. They were brought up using that name I suppose. My mother's parents, who lived in Rushbrooke at one time, always called it Cobh.
Cobh wasn't the only town or village in Ireland to change its name during the War of Independence period, but most reverted to previous names.
Parsonstown - Birr
Kingstown - Dun Laoighaire (or Dunleary)
Kingwilliamstown - Ballydesmond
Maryborough - Port Laoise
Bagnaelstown - Muine Beag (although some still call it Bagnaelstown)
Navan - An Uaimh
Some Irish names didn't last such as An Uaimh or Rath Luirc (Charleville).

Londonderry is Irish? I'm surprised at you Ned. Are you campaigning for a name change?
John Kinnevane tells a good story about that from his school days. They were doing geography with Brother Celsus one day and each had to call out the name of the next town or city marked on the atlas. When it came to Kinna's turn, he was faced with 'London -Derry on the English published Atlas. He read out what was there before him and recieved a whack on the head for his troubles. He couldnt figure out why he had upset the Brother as he was calling out what was written before him. It was only after his 5th or 6th whack on the head that he realised 'London' shouldnt be in there.
As for the Irish-English named towns in OZ, there was another story of how some people used carry the union-jack on St. Patricks day parades in Sydney years ago when old Jack Hartnett lived there in the 1950's. Jack, I'm told used organise a counter march of ex-pats with tri-colours and republican banners and used march against them and upscuttle the lot!

No Fulla, I just presented it as it was on wiki, Derry will always be Derry to me, no london involved!
Paddys day parades in perth and oz today are fairly multicultural, ( i hate that phrase) but are still organised by the Irish clubs.
We still have a major presence in this country, gaelic football, hurling are played with gusto by first, second, third and even fourth generation Irish!
Multicultural? what else could you call it. No doubt some wise one will come up with a trendy new word to take the sting out of it in the future, but it will always mean the same thing, whether we are part of it in the host country, or were part of it when some of us worked abroad and were guests of other nations!

When in rome do as the romans do! In other words If I invite you to my house and if the rules of my house do not sit well with you, thats fine but this is my house and I set the rules, If you want to set the rules well either get your own house or go back to the house you occupied previously!
Might also help to be courteous and civil to your guests, might not need so many rules then, or as the old saying goes, treat people like you would want to be treated yourself.
Interesting thing happened here in Cobh (Queenstown) in the last couple of weeks. Some local business peole installed cameras to catch people who were dumping bags of rubish at shop doorways at night for the last year or so. The whole Town has been talking about it and how the foreign nationals living in the nearby apartments had been too mean to pay for their refuse to be collected. So when the cameras were checked to see who they were, it turned out to belong to three seperate locals who were quiet happy to let the foreigners get the blame (probably started the rumours themselves)! Its just too easy and convenient to blame others and to be 'I'm not a racist BUT!

You're spot on there Kieran. I often see a bag of rubbish deposited near my house on Mondays without any tag and I have a good idea who is doing it and its neither a local nor a young person.
