A German sail-training ship, the 252 tonne brig Roald Amundsen, arrived in Cobh yesterday with its sails in tatters after encountering hurricane force winds off the south coast over the last few days and nights. Eleven of the ship's 18 sails were completely destroyed as the crew battled in winds gusting up to 99 knots (114 mph) and as their little ship heeled over in mountainous seas.
The Roald Amundsen, named after the famous Norwegian polar explorer, is owned by the German Sail Training Association and has her home port at Eckernförde in the Western Baltic sea in the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
She is expected to remain in cobh at the Deepwater Quay until Monday.
I have put some more images on my Flickr page at http://www.flickr.com/photos/carrignafoy/ and on my blog at http://theoldblogcabin.blogspot.com/
