There was a huge fire last night in a four storey storehouse on the Irish Naval Base in Haulbowline, across the harbour from Cobh.

At least six units of the fire brigade from Carrigaline, Crosshaven and Cork City along with a Cork Port tug with water-cannons fought the fire which is still blazing but was brought under control around 1.00am this morning.

Last night I went down to the car-park beside the Five Foot Way between Cobh and Whitepoint to watch the fire across the harbour. Hundreds of onlookers had gathered on the quays of Cobh and watched as flames leaped high into the sky. The flames and smoke could be seen all over Cork's lower harbour.

A naval spokesman said the building was historical and a 19th century Royal naval building, he failed to say it had been constructed by convict labour by the residents of Spike Island -Ned Kelly's crowd!

Nothing like a good disaster to get the masses out for a peep. I got a few snaps also and couldnt believe the number of cars pulling up on the High Road, Lake road. and White point. I left at 11pm and they were still pulling up. Council should start more fires and charge the spectators!
