I hear that the outgoing Northern Ireland First Minister and DUP leader Dr. Ian Paisley is coming to Cobh as guest of the Cobh and Harbour Chamber of Commerce on April 18th.
No chuckling Kieran!:D
There was a good chuckle in the chamber monday night when Admiral Whitty proposed that Paisly was given a civic reception at Town Hall before hand. I couldnt resist shouting "Never, Nerver, Never". When Whitty dropped the bombshell. all eyes turned in my direction for a response! I'm going to keep them sweating for a while!

Would this be the same Admiral who parked on a double yellow line one Sunday morning recently outside Curley's shop? I was just ahead of him and had a few inches to spare before the start of the no parking zone but he was on the double lines and on a corner too!!!
Councillors, I mean Admirals privilege!

I can imagine Dr.Death being into bdsm!
I was speaking to Admiral Whitty (Mayor) outside of a supermarket yesterday when a woman spotted him, came over and tore into him about the Paisley visit. I told the woman that she must have made a mistake because he wasnt the Mayor, he was Major Bunting! It certainly defused the situation and got a bit of laughter!
Wow!! the power of a lady shoppers handbag....phew!! cheers Katy:)

The Irish Examiner has an interesting story this morning (26/3/08):-
26 March 2008
Cobh agrees to civic reception for Paisley visit
By Sean O’Riordan
SECURITY is expected to be tight in a Cork harbour town next month when the north’s first minister makes his furthest foray south.
Ian Paisley has accepted an invitation to be guest speaker at the Cobh & Harbour Chamber of Commerce’s 50th anniversary dinner.
Security sources have indicated their main concern is that dissident Republicans could try and disrupt the visit. Kathleen Gearey, chief executive of Cobh and Harbour Chamber of Commerce, said it had always been hoped to get a high-profile speaker for the chamber’s 50th anniversary.
She said the links between Cobh and Belfast were important, especially when it came to the Titanic. The ill-fated liner was constructed at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, while Cobh was its last port of call before striking an iceberg with the loss of 1,595 lives.
“Mr Paisley has accepted our invitation and will speak to members of the chamber at the Commodore Hotel on Friday, April 18,” said Ms Gearey.
The chamber of commerce has 175 members drawn from Cobh, Carrigaline, Ringaskiddy, Passage West and Monkstown, many of whom are expected to attend the gathering.
“The new Northern Ireland assembly has mended bridges between north and south and, in this climate of new beginnings, the chamber is delighted to welcome Dr Paisley to Cobh and looks forward to his address,” said chamber president Joe MacCoitir.
Meanwhile, Cobh Town Council has agreed to give Mr Paisley a civic reception. Town clerk Padraig Lynch said he had written to the north Antrim MP’s constituency office asking him to confirm if he would accept a civic reception.
“We’re hoping to have it on the afternoon of April 18, but we will work around his schedule if needs be,” said Mr Lynch.
It is being speculated that Dr Paisley may spend the weekend in Cork and may take in a visit of Fota House.
Meanwhile, Cobh & Harbour Chamber of Commerce is also planning ahead for the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.
The anniversary will take place in 2012 and the chamber is hoping to make Cobh a focal point.

I personally find Dr. Paisley's sectarian and right-wing politics to be repugnant but how can people claim he's Irish and then not accept his presence in what they're saying is his own country? I disagree with the expenditure of public money on this bigot however I find the visits of US and UK warships (and any other foreign warships) to be far more offensive than an 82 year old has-been bigot.

Jesus H Christ the chamber welcomes dr. death to Cobh??? And CTC is going to give him a civic reception, ah come on now somewan is definitely takin da piss/ If that arsehole steps foot in cobh i will never ever put a foot down on that hallowed ground which is my birthplace!
As much as i hate to admit it, youre right there Fulla. The chicks are coming home to roost now and those who really regard themselves as republicans cannot in all honesty argue that an Irishman (which Paisley is by the way) should not visit a part of his country. If they do, then they have a very narrow view of the United Ireland they wish to see established. I also agree with you about the war ships fulla!
My question is why he is too visit now..... and is public money being used for a civic reception. And another thought will visitors (tourists) be restricted within Cork and Cobh, during his visit..... cheers Katy

Security will be tight Katy, I don't think he'll be pressing any flesh other than the well pressed flesh of the town's burghers. As to why he's being invited? Publicity seekers I'd say. Personally I wouldn't even open the curtains to see him, let alone go down town.
I think you are right about the publicity seeking angle fulla, so as one of the burghers, I will be putting a word to him that they will not have counted upon in their publicity plans!

Paisley was born in Belfast, so he's Irish in my book. That doesn't mean I like him or agree with his politics, it's a fact.

You get him to admit he's Irish then, last time i heard he held a british passport!!!!
I remember in an RTE interview about 25 years or more ago, Paisley agreed that he was Irish by birth but British by fact of juristiction and allegience. He just stated what we all knew, but didnt concede that it was only a temporary arrangement!
