Friday, 7 March 2008 22:52 Finn Harps came out on top in the battle of the two newly promoted sides at Finn Park.
The home fans in a crowd of over 2,000 were in full voice when the stalemate after a tight opening period was broken on the half-hour.
Chris Breen played the ball in from the right for Stephen Parkhouse to lay it onto Conor Gethins who drilled in home.
Cobh, missing last season's leading striker Davin O'Neill, had edged the early stages but chances were at a premium in a first half played in wet conditions.

Prior to the goal, Harps only chance of note was a Stephen Parkhouse headed over the target.
At the other end Cobh had forced several corners but a weak shot from Graham Cummins was the only time that goalkeeper James Gallagher was called upon to save a shot.
On 40 minutes the visitors thought that they had equalised when Graham Cummins beat James Gallagher but a flag had been raised for off-side.
Harps, who were runners-up in the First Division last season, doubled their advantage on 47 minutes.
Gethins found Parkhouse inside the box and even though his shot was blocked by James McCarthy, Shaun Williams - one of three new signings in the Harps line-up - followed up to forced the ball in from close range.
Briefly, it looked as if Harps might put the game completely out of reach of Cobh.
But Stephen Henderson's spirited youngsters refused to buckle again and gave themselves a real lifeline on 64 minutes.
Harps failed to clear a free and in nipped Kevin Murray to guide the ball into the net with a low strike.
Finn Harps: Gallagher, Roddy, Holmes, Labonte, Malcolm, Shields, Breen, McGowan, Parkhouse, Gethins, Williams. Subs: Funston for Breen (70), Boyle for Roddy (78 mins), Brolly for Gethins (86 mins).

Cobh Ramblers: McCarthy, Carey, J. Meade, Murray, Guthrie, J. Kearney, O'Reilly, Cummins, Mulconry, Barrett, Cambridge. Subs: Lally for Mulconry (65 mins), Coleman for Barrett (74 mins).

Referee: Mr. D. Hanney (Dublin).

NOT a great start, but when we get a few players back, things will change!

It's a very long drive from Cobh to Ballybofey - about 8 hours allowing for short stops. I assume the lads went by bus which could be even longer. They must have been tired. Of course Finn Harps have to come down to Cobh soon so it should even out.

Anyway, one swallow doesn't make a summer.

They showed Ramblers disallowed goal on TV and it was not off side! they concluded that Ramblers were the better side and should have won!

Have they got a P.A. announcer for Saturday night? - A half good announcer would freak out the opposition!

They were robbed again -ref and linesman both watched a Galway player blatantly palm the ball away from Ramblers heads infront of goal but refused a penalty, but that was in keeping with many bad decisions for the 90 mins! the best team had to settle for 1-1 draw!
The rise in divisions has seen a rise in a new PA system and Speaker too. They have a guy with a mixed Brit/American accent now. I think they call it an Atlantic accent - not a touch of Irish in it. It definately shouldnt be allowed announce at the Paddy days parades!

The only thing - he hesitated at the end when announcing the gate number of 900. Some might think he wasnt sure or was making it up like the GAA used be accused of in the past! He'd make a good DJ though!

Wasnt there but heard the goolkeeper made a couple of uncharteristic slips on his goal line. As per last two games, they also had a perfectly good goal disallowed I'm told. The best team, l(ast years champions) won the game though. Put it down to experience!

I'm told they are expecting 4,000 at this game. the 1300 tickets they gave to Cork were sold out in 10 mins. Now they are travelling to Cobh in their droves to buy more. A club official told me last night that Cork City will out number the local fans by 3 to 1 and will look like the home team!

Kieran

The safety officer has limited the numbers to 3,500 -tickets are like gold dust!

10 euro a ticket?

Kieran

€15 but they were selling for three times that for those that badly wanted them. 4,200 folks at the game. A truly electric atmosphere. The two keepers pulled off some top-class saves. 0-0 draw but per last few games, the ref ignore another save that Cobhman Mick Devine made for Cork City while he was over his line for a plit second. We all saw it from the corner line where we were -so did the linesman but he refused to raise his flag!
